If you click on some one's name you will get to their profile.
Mine tells a bit about who I am...some people (including you!) are not so forthcoming.

Politely said, Del.

My boss, who lives in Colorado, of all places, has been here (from Liverpool) in the colonies for many years, but he still speaks like he just got off the boat. We call it The Queen's English.

This forum has a user count in the hundreds - if not thousands if you count those who pass through but never register. I'm sure the Masters could provide better numbers.

Take Del's advice, rather than swamp the board with answers; use the Profile pages.

on the right hand side of the page, below the cr4 sections list is a box called site indices.

click on either show members or who's online to get to list of members, as del the very savvy cat said, click on their name to go to their profile page. also from their you can look at their posts and get a sense of what is their interest.

Re: Everyone Introduce yourself

01/03/2009 1:30 PM

It's what we do as engineers, actually. Faced with uncertainty and darkness, we engineer solutions. Nietzsche used "dancing over the abyss" as a metaphor for remaining enthusiastic under all conditions that we encounter in life. It rang true to me.

"That you would learn my wisdom from me; even the worst thing has two good reverse sides-even the worst thing has two good dancing legs; that you would learn you higher men, to put yourselves on your right legs. So unlearn, I pray you, the melancholy and all the crowd-sadness!" source: auch sprach zarathustra chapter 6 the higher man.

When we engineers create a solution that pushes away the darkness, the cold, the ignorance, I call that dancing. If we fail, the darkness remains. but we don't fail, we learn even from our failures. Our mistakes teach us. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger applies to our knowledge as well.

It is for me the existential joy of engineering (good phrase but not mine, its samuel florman's http://tinyurl.com/945vvw)
that has brought us the many blessings we share, even as we moan about our current economic malaise.

Milo "still dancing"

Dancing is always welcome. Another non-offtopic

why did you mark yourself off-topic.

I am the eccentric person around here, due to my speed of response to problems and that has earned me the eccentricity coefficiient (the thought processes not understood and neither the succint explanations). Unfortunately the explanations if more than twice repeated irritates (gremlin character do not change). Note that the solutions are not always the correct one but they come fast.

Additionally sometimes pranks are played. And engineer of a certain age who is not supposed to play prank must be me (Mischievous Character, mechanically oriented and quite often may be destructive)

Humbled. I remember when I first signed on (sort of) and saw all the answers you veterans had and the quality of the answers and thought, Wow.

I'm still amazed at the level of knowledge and experience of many.

And I've learned never to underestimate the difficulty of explaining science and critical thinking to folks who never had to...

Thanks Ken, and thanks to all.

Hi, omer!

First of all, a great big WELCOME to CR4! I hope you have fun in here, sharing comments and views with fellow professionals in dozens of engineering disciplines. This is truly a unique place to share your ideas.

Because many of us have been around for a while, it would be quite a job for us to introduce ourselves to each new member of the site. So you will meet with some reluctance from those of us who are registered members as well as some others who chime in from time to time in order to offer some interesting thoughts without actually joining.

You can find out about most of us simply by clicking on our names or the little "interest & hobby" icons below the names where we have included some brief background information. In addition, there are two other sites (at least!) in here, where you can learn about many of your CR4 fellow members. These are this thread, and this one. Just click on either (or both!) of <--- these links.

Enjoy! Hope to see your contributions to the articles your will find on your email inbox on an almost daily basis.

Everyone Introduce yourself

01/04/2009 1:47 PM

Hello everyone,

Despite being blatantly apathetic about the world, or how it may judge me, I've realised it's a lot more impressive when people discover your good disposition without you having to help them with it but as a thread starter i think this time i have to do it :) .

I'm actually from Pakistan but migrated to Canada in year 2002.I work as a Software Engineer and have been into this buisness since last 7 years.I'm new as a registered member but i've been visiting cr4 for quite some time.I find it quite interesting place to get help in different topics.

Anyways I'm glad some of you responded to this thread.

Wish you all good luck

Regards,

Omer.

Hello Omer,

Conversation takes rapport. As it stands you know more about most of us (have access to more info than you give) than we know about you. This is acceptable but is not the fast track to communication and "as we will be able to know each other a little bit more"

As you have seen we are a very eclectic group of people/engineers who like to build and design. We try to be tolerant and some some are more than others. This varies by subject by person.

We like to joke but try not to be offensive, but sometimes one mans mirth is another's soft spot. So take comments with or off topic with a grain of salt and some not so marked the same way.

Personally I am a design engineer that likes to build and make what I can design. (never enough time for this) I study Law and welding, Have many interests and quirks. I want to be out doing right now but it is to cold to get my water based cutting lubricant to stay in its liquid form. And my quench barrel at my Blacksmith forge is of the same mind.

Welcome to CR4 Omer and Assalam Alekum.

Click on the Avtar and you will get introduced yourself but better, as you go along contributing or even just reading you will come across a great numbers and numbers of CR4 friends and excellent engineers (like : Del the Cat, Milo, Vulcan, Spiky, Abdel Halem Galala, Guest, Mark etc. etc. etc....... I apologise for the list is tooooo.. long) who come along to help and guide you in any (repeat any) query(s). With time you get to know their strength (exception: Guest, Del, Spiky etc...again the list is toooo ...long for, surprisingly that they know much toooo.. much). Its interesting for each members contribution keeps increasing your knowledge drop by drop - the best part, you never overflow..

Me , personally on knowledge = a small "puddle" but, no problem - i have over hundreds of friends in CR4 who to me are "Oceans" and I will NEVER run Dry till I live.

My utmost RESPECT to all CR4 Members. and aplogise again for not mentioning everybody's name.

Re: Everyone Introduce yourself

I don't know whether somebody has observed, I kept the origin of my species hidden for more than a year, deliberately.

When as an engineer I want to help, or comment, I will like to be as objective as possible. Sometimes my judgment may be affected (especially under current condition say India Vs Pakistan, Israel Vs Gulf etc) and politics may creep into our field.

Most of the industrial activities, to which we belong, are same throughout our field. As I believe are the safety norms. So if the pump in phenol line (current thread) has a safety problem, it is everywhere. The differences in the safety norms are created by local politics and not by the engineers. So sitting here we can provide our insight to the correspondent and guide him.

We get our feelings (and bondages) through the posts we see (by the way why del has the traces of nut ? I always thought it is the prerogative of squirrel or del had kris in his breakfast, did you ?)

I always felt that people with several nuts lose better remain unknown, else somebody will try to tighten them, and we will lose our identity.

PS: did you really mean eclectic (or you mistyped eccentric?)

Eclectic

Selecting; choosing (what is true or excellent in doctrines, opinions, etc.) from various sources or systems; as, an eclectic philosopher.

Consisting, or made up, of what is chosen or selected; as, an eclectic method; an eclectic magazine.

One who follows an eclectic method.

I know eclectic, but i prefer eccentrics (being the famous one around). may be mostly because i try to move tangentially (in concepts) and land up in orbits where others move radially (and jump into the black hole )

I have worked in quality and now heading a portion of manufacturing - but my love is learning and changing what my designers have designed (for better or worse) - Brad the designer will not like it -

It is really fun to show to the designer that a better performing and easier manufacturable design exist (for this you have to think other way).

As I said, i love to learn, and for a year or so my hobby is TRIZ and trying to use it for my products. Additionally am a Sr member of ASQ. Got a certificate in SQC and OR amongst others.

Hello sb,

Brad the designer will not like it

Only if you exclude me from the how and why. When one quits learning, one is for all practical means dead. To correct by perfecting and not explaining how and why is to expect the same short comings again.

A designer who does not build and repair makes cars like the US big three Hard to work on and built to fail, over priced one off parts, seat belts that not even a child's go cart would find legal.

A design is like a statue first you remove all that can't work, then all that is impractical, then use the best fit from what is left. There are many paths to the top of the mountain, the best path depends on what is the intent.

UV,

its one of those words that always kind of confused me.. so when I read the original question, I thought I would just go get a definition. I didn't mean to compete with you on that.... but now that i know more what it means.. I am adopting it.. synthesizing it into the rest of my eclectic vocabulary

HI, sb!

The problem with cats, as with chocolate bars, is that traces of nut might occur by association rather than direct contact. In Del's instance, cats (really brave ones) will eat squirrels (really stupid and essentially quite small ones) if they get the opportunity, hence: "may" and "traces". It's only a fair warning, not a fait accompli.

Hi Omer,

Welcome aboard.

I think most of my information is on my profile page.

I often think it would be great if more people put some information on their profiles to help others out. A small description of their background and the areas the specialize in would be of enormous help at times.

Kind Regards

Kev

Hello omer,

I welcome you! It is a great site and there is some real talented and clever people here. Excluding myself!................I am babybear.

I hope you enjoy your time here and perhaps tell others about the site.

I am mainly on the Mechanical Engineers part, but you can reply to any thread and then you may be on Engineers, Electronics and other types of 'Engineering'. They often over-lap skills anyway.

Good luck and you started in the right way, by saying hello!

Have a great new year.............................

Hi, babybear!

"there is some real talented and clever people here. Excluding myself!"

Not nice, babybear! Trying to slip one over on ol' omer, a new guy.

Don't pay any attention to bb, omer. Anyone on this site will tell you that bb's one of our bright lights in here, and that self-deprecation is just one typical means of bb's camouflage.

In fact, if you see a comment by bb in any of the blogs, read it to find out who babybear really is. No further intro will be necessary.

Shame on you, bb...trying to pull that kind of stuff on the new guy!

Greetings, Omer!

I guess you've seen by now that comments on CR4 run from the nice to the naughty to the nutty, and sometimes they can be any combination of those.

BTW, I'm one of the few here who is not a professional engineer. I am a drafter, and most of the images I use as avatars are things I drew up in AutoCAD or Inventor. I'm also a ham radio operator who has played with antenna designs. I built one of my designs, but it was just a rough prototype made of wire supported by a PVC frame, and I have used it in some radio direction finding exercises. I have also worked on a design of an anemometer because I have a long standing interest in weather. Working on the anemometer brought me to CR4 when I went to look for a bearing through GlobalSpec, signed up for one of their newsletters, and got drawn in by a Challenge Question. I guess you could say I'm an amateur engineer.

You don't have to be crazy to hang out on CR4, but it sure helps!
