On the maintenance side you have the rotating equipments or the steam generating system
From maintenance angle you should concentrate on the diagnostic, RLA and Preventive maintenance angle.
For rotating equipments, there are a number of vendors, check "Vibration analysis of Rotating equipments" who will hook up the expert systems to your machines and that will provide not only the incipient faults but also the residual lives of bearings etc.
The clains are there but i do not know the veracity. Howver on these aspect a lot of work is on.
The operation works on the system optimisation angle. Pl contact your supplier/ use your own experts/experience. Tune the systems. As your system becomes older, you will have to change the tuning.
Some works are going on in R&D area on this aspect (dynamic optimisation) on equipment wise manner. However they are still on paper/ lab level and not tried on the actuals.
Infact more effort is on the maintenance angle to keep the shut down times to minimum rather than the optimisation angles. here also the work is on the Rotating machineries (through vibration signal analysis), on the pressurised line eg boilers, the fault signals are usually too late. the pick ups are there but they get the signal on mild attacks and not on blocked artery.
