Micro Vu Squareness Checks

01/06/2009 9:29 AM

Good day to all,

I am having an issue with a Micro Vu System. In short, we lay our part to be measured on glass, camera pointing down on top from top view.

We then focus with the "Z" axis to find edge of part, then we locate our first hole.

The problem is, the holes we are measuring too are lower than the part edge ( steps down in part), so we have to re-focus with "Z" to find the hole edge.

IN doing this, depending on how much lower the hole location is to the edge location, we are loosing anywhere from 6 to 10 thousandths in measurement.

It has been stated to me to check the squareness of theZ to the X and Y planes sepeartely and adjust as necessay. Unfortuately, I do not know the procedure to do so.

Is there any Micro Vu guru's out there that could help me out?

Parallax is what your trying to correct.

Ultimate correction would be achieved using a collamination tube, but might be cost prohibitive.

A cheap dirty solution would be to suspend a target (such as a reticle) above a mirrored surface. Focus adjustments between the actual target and the reflection will indicate direction and degree of correction needed.

Note: some care should be employed to insure that the reticle and mirror are both parallel to each other and perpendicular to the lens.

Good Luck!

Good answer MrM.

The "solution" mentioned sound like a calibration process??? The "correction" part comes from doing some kind of mechanical adjustment. (Lift the hood and adjust some set screws.)

If you don't have the procedure, you should be able to request it thru Micro-Vu for free.

Good luck

If this is still an issue, Use the Z-Perpendicular Fixture, C8740142 $90.00, and Machine-Calibrate Z-Perpendicularity and follow the instructions. It is easier if you also have C8740141 $90.00, Z-Scale Calibration Fixture, attached to the table as a guide for the Perp. Fixture. The software will automatically insert a correction in the Linear Correction table. Don Fogell, SWGage dfogell@southwesterngage.com
