HDD Partition and CD Drive - Drive Letter Problem

01/06/2009 8:29 PM

Regards.

I one PC inspite the CD drive is disconnected, window do not fill the gap.

I tried:

1. Normally CD Drive can be alloted a letter well behind number of partition letters say

a 4 partitions HDD covers C, D, E & F & Cd can be alloted X, Y or Z in Device-Manager

but there is no such option. [XP]

2. Disconnected CD Drive & left to window to re-allot letters to partitions.

but invain

Any idea please

Re: HDD Partition "D" skipped & CD drive has "D" drive letter

Hello Haajee:

I encountered a similar problem, and to the best of my recollection you could correct this problem in Windows 2000 professional. As you said that option does not seem to be available in XP professional.

Your questions spurred me into action, if you wish to correct this problem you will need to acquire a copy of Norton partition Magic, it has the tools necessary to perform this procedure.

The procedure I just used was to disconnect my DVD ROM drive (this may or may not have been necessary) then using Norton partition Magic in the advanced settings it will allow you to change the drive label, PartitionMagic while also ask you if you would like it to remap the drives, which I did, thus all the registry entries were updated to the new drive letters.

My hard drive partitions are now sequential, and I have changed my a DVD-ROM from drive letter D. to F, (my hard drive is partitioned in three sections) everything seems to be functioning properly at this point.

So if you want to go out and acquire a copy of PartitionMagic it can be done. Or you can continue doing exactly what I did for the last three months and ignore the nonsequential hard drive partitions, it has no effect on the operation of the computer, however if you're like me even though it was inconsequential it always bothered me.

I had this problem once. In case we are talking about "IDE" cable:

Try to see if the jumper on the HDD is set to "Master".

If so, the motherboard assumes there must be a "Slave" somewhere, and will reserve "D:\" for a CD-ROM

If so, try to move the HDD-jumper to "Single-Drive / Cable Select", and it should be fine
