Vertical Mixer Blockage Issues

01/08/2009 11:51 PM

In Fertiliser Industry, FSA, Sulphuric Acid and Rock is mixed in a vertical Mixer. The issue is that the Mixer boggs down frequently. The Mixer is a standard paddle in a tank type arrangement. The tank is lined with Poly Propylene. The reaction temperature is expected to be in the order of 100 deg C.

I considered PTFE, hoping that PTFE may have non stick properties and would assist in breaking the bond between liner and product, but there is no one in Australia that I know who can weld PTFE. Upon checking with one Contractor I learned that PTFE lining of cylinders with flanges is spun rather than welded, this led me to PFA which can be welded. But again I do not know anyone who can weld PFA.

My queries:

  1. Am I thinking correctly that PTFE or PFA will be better than PP with regards to coeff of friction?
  2. Is there any company that does welding of PFA?
  3. Is there anyone who has experience in similar industry who has solved this problem?

Look forward to hear from you. By the way, the reaction also generate Fluorine gas.

The problem will not be solved by a different wall coating. The torque required is determined by the ball of 'dough. A standard paddle mixer is incorrect for this service. A 'grease soap mixer' is required because the mixture goes through a very stiff phase. The torque required will bend the shaft and break off the paddle arms of standard mixers. I suggest you discuss this with Lightning Mixers.

Thanks Keith,

Interestingly the paddle of mixer is very robust but has no leading angle. I will research 'grease soap mixer' and also take this up with Lightnin.

Thanks for the lead.

Prem
