Practical Solar Cells

01/09/2009 7:53 PM

I have been following solar energy for awhile. I am looking for information about ways to build solar cells at home. I have seen the article on heating a copper plate. It puts out microamps. What we need is a real usable type idea that could be constructed by the home experimenter. This would probably use some thin film technology such as CdTe. There may be a number of mixtures that are within reach of a home builder. I am looking to find a few people that have done this and can tell how to obtain the materials. There may be several technologies that could be used by the small scale builder. If you have some information, please join the discussion.

I have two documents I have downloaded from the Internet that describe a couple of ways to make a solar cell at home- neither of which seems really practical for serious applications, but would provide a good place to start. If you would like to see these, send me a private message and I will forward these documents to you (one is html and the other is pdf). I don't have a reference for where I got them, so I can't post a link here. The html document describes the heated copper plate technique, and the pdf describes a system using titanium oxide and glass plates.

"I don't have a reference for where I got them, so I can't post a link here."

He won't because things you see posted on the internet have copywrite protection just like a book or a photgraph.

Meaning at the very least, he would need to produce a direct link to the place he got the information from. He no longer has the name of the source of that information, so he cannot legally present it here.

................. something along those lines.

Maybe Titanium Dioxide?

Check this out....here......does not directly apply to your immediate question. However it could be a generation or two early.

Yes, I am very interested in these documents. I am most interested in the
TiO2 material. With new technologies being announced regularly, I was hoping that somebody would be on to a superior technology that is within the capactiy of the home builder. Most of us do not have access to a silcon proccessing facility. Thank you and please forward any documents to my mailbox. I would appreciate it.

I always of the opinion to make in gurage something which is usable. I do not believe one has to make every thing.

Dell world bigest computer maker is fabless they design computer then off load other to make on the name of Dell and then Dell sales this. This I just wanted to bring up for reason that is if you have defined need what watt of power and how much you want to have heating capacity of water then you can design system.

Solar cell are available so does copper sheet along with solder ribbon and other item. What you need is solder iron rod, a Table and and few scree driver, small deill m/c and can make solar power and solar based water heater.

Due to the apparent interest in this subject, I have researched the original sources of the documents that I referenced in my earlier post.

The copper plate solar cell comes from: http://scitoys.com/

The glass plate/Titanium dioxide (yes, dioxide is correct- not being a chemist, I am sometimes a bit inaccurate in converting shorthand to full name): http://voh.chem.ucla.edu/classes/Solar_cells/

A quick check confirmed that these references are still current.

No worries friend - I knew not either. Was source checking what was online available and noticed the discrepancy.

Where in Texas? Many years ago, I lived and worked in San Antonio (actually, I also lived, worked and studied in El Paso, but that isn't quite central Texas, is it?). I actually met Ponce de Leon in Bourne, Texas, live and well, enjoying the waters of the Fountain of Youth...

"Charley" You are a Guru. I thought Guru's were required to know something about everything, and folks who sign in as guest, instead of using their name or handle, know little or nothing about anything.

Hello tcorn137:

If you could tell me which country you are from it would help please?

I am a member of this CAT Organization. They can send you a magazine and products Catalogue. Quite small catalogue but lots of things on how to build solar cells. Take a look at the site it is well worth it!

www.cat.org.uk/

What kind of power do you need to get from your cell? And can you tell me what you already know about? What do you want to power, is it a normal house, or is it to combine with other alternative power sources to top up the supply? I presume you thought of a solar cell because it has no moving parts?

Have you got any info' on 'off the shelf' solar cells?

Check out YOU TUBE also.

Did you know solar panel put out more power if under water and kept cool. Sounds unreal since the electron flow should be easier with heat.
