Terrain Recognition Software

01/10/2009 5:20 AM

All Hail To The Fraternity & Sorority of Tech Heads in CR4!

I am NOT an engineer by profession, but I have had a leaning for sci-tech since I was young. I am a financial planner now with AIG! Long story. I was quite fascinated by the Facial Recognition Software used for security reasons and I was wondering if there is market for a 'Terrain Recognition' Software or whether the US Army has such a software. FR Softwares are designed to recognize unique features of a human face whereas with a 'Terrain Recognition' Software, this program would be able to recognize any changes in a given terrain. Why? The US Army is facing a lot of problems in Iraq and maybe in Afghanistan due to road-side bombs. Since the devices are buried in the ground possibly at night, such a program will be able to note any changes to a given terrain if it has been disturbed. The FR program is programmed to notice similarities whereas the 'TR Software' would be able to recognize changes. This would help save lives. If nobody has thought of it that, I guess I am the first who thought of it. I hope the 'big brass' in the US Army are listening.

Happy New Year

This sounds something like the terrain-following systems used in cruise missles, which use a satillite image to establish routing; but what you are suggesting would require more intimate detail. I suspect with the amount of terrain of interest to be covered, one would be dealing with a phenomenally large data set in order to identify, say, a 1 foot diameter hole dug in the ground over a 100 km stretch of road...

Dear cwarner7 11,

What I was suggesting was a system whereby a camera mounted on a ATV, Hummer or ever a robot on wheels which is plugged into the software. During the Olympic Games in China, the Chinese authorities were using a Facial Recognition system to detect terrorists, or for that matter anti-govt or political dissidents. The program was quite effective on a test subject, even when the test subject was wearing a disguise in a crowded subway. What can be done in the matter of detecting road side bombs would be to do a video recording of a road on the previous day and super-imposing the image on the software the next time the road is being used. Any major changes within the parameter set by the experts will be detected on the road surface.Hence, a Terrain Recognition software could do the job. What it really does is to detect changes in a given area, not the similarities at ground level.
