01/14/2009 8:38 AM

Hi everybody my name is Bhavya Paruchuri and this year I completed my B.Tech in Civil Engineering from India ,now I am in London I would like to pursue my career in building design as am always fascinated by that field.I have been applying for jobs for the post
of graduate civil engineer but could not get any response from any companies that I applied.I worked in an architect's office for a very short period and so I have very little work experience. So I need an advice whether it is a good option for me to work or do my Masters.

Welcome to CR4, bhavya. When the job market gets tough (as it is right now), going back to school can be a good idea. Otherwise, you may have to spend some time working in a job that doesn't further your ultimate career goals. That's my two cents.

Bhavya,

Welcome. I think that I understand your situation. I graduated from university in 1983, a similar economic climate, with emphasis in structures and geotechnical engineering. I ended up taking a position in transportation. I've been working with the Minnesota Dept. of Trans. now for over 25 years. It has been very gratifying. Being part of a government organization has offered oportunities to work in all of the Civil Engineering disciplines. However, I do have some regrets. I would have liked to get that Masters Degree.

If you do not have a family or other financial obligations, go for it. We wish you well.

something I have learned as a Civil Engineer, in most specialities (except geotechnical and structural) a MS doesn't have any more practical implications to your employment than a BS. It can be important for certain types of geotechnical positions and licensure, and almost always has some major implications to licensure and employment as a structural engineer. Transportation, Environmental, and Water Resources specialties tend to be more oriented to management, project management, planning, and permitting at higher levels. In those roles, communications skill, persuasiveness, salesmenship, and other judgemental personality traits are much more valuable than analytical skills. If you are going in to those specialties, I have found a MBA in management/marketing on your resume is typically considered much more valuable to most engineering firms, and even many municipalities.

Hi Bhavvya

I would advice you go for Masters now; there are plenty of Jobs for you anytime you have done your masters.

By the way, learning is unending. So go for it when you have time and resources.
