Optical Clocks: Better than Atomic Clocks?

Scientists in Japan have found a way to trap neutral atoms in an optical lattice that could result in clocks accurate to one part in 1018.

It turns out there are some very interesting reasons. Check out The Science of Timekeeping for a great review of "the history of time" and ultraprecision clocks, written by some of the guys who have been involved.
