The Pedalite

05/25/2005 5:00 PM

Worried that the kids aren't safe enough as they pedal their bicycles home after dark? Then check out pedalite, a bicycle pedal safety light that converts spindle rotation into electrical energy. Unlike many other bike lights, pedalite stores energy in a capacitor instead of a chemical battery. This bike light is smart, too. It turns itself on automatically when the bicycle is ridden. After all, these are the same kids who conveniently "forget" to brush their teeth, right?

Flashlight

05/26/2005 9:29 AM

It looks like it works on the same principle as the hand crank flashlight they make for emergencies. It looks like they are using hte capacitor to act like a battery; it doesn't matter if the charge dissipates because it means the kids not peddling the bike.

No charge while stationary?

It's not very helpful then if the kid is on the side of the road with a flat tire.

No. It's would be as useless as the bike itself. It also looks like they stop by the side of the road to chat for a few minutes it will stop working too.

But its still a great idea. Its not taking up any extra room on the bike and will work even when the kids have forgotten to bring there lights with them. Nice idea pedalite.
