Cathodes for Lithium Car Batteries

01/15/2009 2:07 AM
Can someone please let me know whether Cathode, used for manufacturing automotive batteries, is produced by Lithium mineral or Lithium Brine or both?

Also can you please let me know the role of Lithium Chemical Converters and whether this process is done by the the lithium mineral producers or there are companies who do this?

The simple answer is none of the above. No currently manufactured automotive battery is based on Lithium. There are a number of reasons for this, almost all of them having to do with Lithium's propensity to burst into flame in the presence of water or during overcharging. There are a number of manufacturer's that are working on prototype LiIon batteries for use in automotive applications, but none of them are yet on the street. They generally require heavy and expensive crash frames and fire suppression equipment to make them safe for use in cars. The weight of such equipment offsets their energy density making them only marginally more efficient than other battery technologies, if at all.
