Designing PCBs from Picaxe VSM

01/15/2009 10:01 AM

Hi all

I have a Picaxe VSM program and wonder if anyone has had experience importing its Net List into Eagle or any other program and designing PCB's from this. This is black hole for me, so any guidance or tutorials would be appreciated.

Thanks Tony

Here is what their website says:

"Export net lists for use in a dozen different PCB applications "

So, is the PCB application you want to use supported? When you go to export the netlist from the program, it will probably have a drop down list of the supported netlist types. This is where you need to start to determine what the next step will be.

Also found at their website, the following link to part 4 of a tutorial, the section that tells about how to output a Bill Of Materials, and a PCB Netlist. It also tells you what packages it supports, and their recommendations. Looks like Eagle has a free option, as long as your board size is small. Here's the link.

Good luck,

Thanks Tom,

I've been down that track, Eagle was too small, in the free version, for my latest attempt and I couldn't find where in Eagle to use the Netlist or I would have upgraded.

I have just found a program called Diptrace, free for up to 250 pins and has a detailed tutorial, unfortunately I couldn't get Tango (the common link to work either). Diptrace doesn't have specific Picaxe chips, I'm currently using a 28X1, but looking on the Picaxe website there is a list of the chips Picaxe is made from and those are available in Diptrace and can be modified (pins renamed).

I need to design the simple circuit they use and follow both the tutorials through with it, if you have a similar interest I'm happy to stay in touch. Thank you for taking the time to reply and re-reminding me of the Tutorial 4.

Tony

Tony,

I don't have a real interest in the Picaxe stuff, just trying to help out. I do PCB design as my day job. We use PCAD (from Altium, I think they are a "local" company for you), and also Mentor Graphics (for our high-end stuff). Good luck! If there is something I can help with, I'll try, just ask.
