RCCD and Welding

Hi I have recently built and installed a new 600A MDB and Sub DB in a factory that builds truck bodies, the previous MDB did not have anysort of RCD protection, and having encountered problems before with ELCBs and welding machines I was loath to put any in. Now I have a problem with the supply authority whose inspector wants RCD protection for the whole installation.

I need a valid argument against RCD protection for welding circuits.

Ive done this work in Malawi, I have been to the standards assoc here and drawn a blank, I think their standards are a combination of SABS ( South Africa) and IEE.

Can anyone help ?

In the interests of safety why would you not wish to have earth leakage protection?

Make a contract that covers you fully......then install.

Perhaps there are special ones for such situations? Talk to the welding equipment supplier.

The panel is already installed. I built the panel didnt install it.

Dan,

if you've had problems with welders and RCDs then the problem is leakage on the welding kit, not the system. Find and repair the faults on the site / equipment and all will be well. It makes good sense of course to install the system so that one fault does not shut the whole plant down.

Yes, he should check the equipment with a Megger type tester. A digital voltmeter does not tell the whole story!

If the transformer is a true primary/secondary transformer, not an "Auto" transformer, then the equipment should not give problems with RCCD equipment....

If the input and output are connected, even via a cap, I could well imagine that problems could occur....
