Selecting a MCCB/ MCB

01/21/2009 12:41 AM

Hi, Can anyone of explain me about the advantage of considering Ics (Rated Ultimate Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity) for Selecting a MCCB/ MCB instead of Icu (Rated Service Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity). Thanks and Regards.

Ics( Rated short circuit breaking capacity)

It indicate the short circuit interrupting capacity of the circuit breaker . In this rated value even after breaking the circuit at that value the CB can still be used for 100% rating after reset.

Icu ( Ultimate short circuit breaking capacity )

It indicate the absolute maximum interrupting capacity of the circuit breaker. Ionics a breaker surpass this value for interruption the CB is inc capable to carrying it's 100 % rated capacity any more after reset.

IC's should be selected based on the maximum deliverable fault current. You may have to check with local utility co to determine what that is, most commercial or industrial applications would typically be in 65k to 200k range.
