Space Heaters and Transformers

01/21/2009 10:27 PM

dear all,

if i want to use oil type transformer, 4500 kVA, 13.8kV/ 4.16kV. which the primary is 13.8 kV, comes from distribution pole and the secondary is 4.16 kV to supply MCC.

is it required to use space heater while the site temperature is 80 degree fahreinheit.

1. inside bushing chamber ?

2. inside marshaling box ?

beside that, in other case, if we use dry type transformer, shall we use space heater in winding enclosure ?

thank...

We typically see space heaters in geographic locations with large differences in daytime and nightime temperatures, and relatively high humidity.

The space heaters and thermosats are used to create a slight airflow inside the enclosure to dry up any dew or moisture that accumulates.

Not knowing anything about the environmental conditions of your installation I say this with caution. As long as your dry type transformer has space around it to ventilate ( typically 12-24"), the heat generated from the windings should remove any moisture.

Mositure is a killer to transformer insulation, and I personally don't recomend use for outdoor appications-- a oil filled, with a sealed tank will last much longer
