Wall Thickness for Stainless Steel Pipes

01/22/2009 5:55 AM

How can I know the wall thickness for Sch 60S - SS Pipe ( 16").

However, in ASME B36.19, wall thickness is given for 5S, 10S, 40S &

80S.

Thanks

B36.19M is an alternate standard for stainless steel pipe and does not recognize SCH 60S.

If you want other wall thicknesses - drop the 'S' designation and order stainless pipe in accordance with B36.10M

Digging a little more ............

It seems you are out of luck, that is, it seems you are looking for a wall thickness of between 0.5" and 0.375"

B36.19M -

  • Sch 80S = 0.500"
  • Sch 40S = 0.375"

B36.10M -

  • Sch 40 (XS) = 0.500"
  • STD (Sch 30) = 0.375"

I don't know the reason why you are looking for a wall thickness in between those designations. But, if it is to save money on less material - I doubt that will happen - you will need a custom mill run of pipe, with a minimum order, and that will not be cheap!!!!

My advice is to bite the bullet and go with 0.500" wall thickness.

Diameter of the pipe has an influence on the wall thickness.

2" Standard Black Pipe, Regardless of it being mild steel or stainless steel is approximately 1/8" or .125" for SCH40, and 1/4" or .25" for SCH 80. Whereas on a 5" pipe SCH 40 is about 3/16" thick.

Also note that Pipe wall thickness has a more lax tolerance range then if you were talking about round tube, which is more on the money on their specific dimensions.

Yes, you are correct - I should have noted that those thickness dimensions were specifically for 16" NPS

I think he was using B36.10M as a reference - not a requirement.?

... you could measure it, or have your source for the pipe specify the dimension.

16" Schedule 60 has a wall thickness of 0.656"

Since stainless steel pipe is commonly available in steel designation, I bet this is what you have.... SS pipe 16" sch 60 (not 60S)

As per ANSi, 16" sch 60 should read at 0.656".

16" sch 60 is 0.656" is from ANSI B36.10 & not as per 36.10.

Thanks
