Capacitor banks...

01/24/2009 3:27 AM

Hello friends,

We are using manual controlled capacitor banks for power factor improvement.

I want to discuss problems which can occur due to excess switching of capacitor banks than requirement. Our machines are PLC controlled; So is there any side effect on PLCs,power factor?

With best regards...

The manual switching of capacitors has the disadvantage that the power factor cannot be controlled depending on the variation of load and when the load is totally switched off the PF may even go leading. The variation of PF is not found to have any effect on PLC controlled machines . But it will have adverse effect on the energy consumption and will result in higher bills and Low power factor penalty if applicable. It is always advisable to install APFC compared to manual switching.
