Resleeving Backup Rolls for Rolling Mills

01/24/2009 12:14 PM

ALL BIG ROLLING MILLS USE BACKUP ROLLS WITH THE WORK ROLLS. THESE ROLLS ARE OF UPTO 1500MM DIA X 8000MM LONG WITH BARREL UPTO 2000MM.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT ROLLING MILLS IN EUROPE AND AMERICA ARE RESLEEVING THE OLD & WORN OUT ROLLS BY GRINDING, AND THEN SHRUNK FITTING NEW SLEEVES ON THE BARREL.WANT HELP IN THIS PROCESS.

Also, Timken is into roll repair:

Timken did weld build-up on backup and work rolls for an aluminum mill here.

I can't imagine a sleeve staying in place, and not squirming around!

Re: Re-sleeving Backup Rolls for Rolling Mills

I have worked on Sleeving Rolls. Teflon Sleeves,Teflon Glue, Heat Shrinking the Sleeve by Blowing Hot air from 3 Electric Heat Guns, While roll is slowly turning in a Roll Grinder as the Heat gun assembly move from one end roll grinder to other. Roll is ground first, before new sleeve is installed, Roll is kept turning slowly over night to cure glue and keep Roll Round, roll will sag in middle if stopped turning and could not be ground round with a bend in the middle of the roll . Sleeve is then ground to specs using a grinding stone and running a special grinding coolant. Metso Paper company has recovered many types of Rolls with special rubber compounds that were compatible with all of our sleeved or unsleeved Roll needs, I have also used Steam to Heat Shrink Plastic Type Roll Cover on large Suction Rolls.
