Batteries

Are 1.2v rechargeable batteries, actually 1.23v? Does the mAh, just mean how long the battery will last? I am making a back up battery for my laptop, its 11.1v, 4000 mAh, and could I just wire 9 rechargeable batteries and add a plug to the power port?

Make sure you have the right wire size and that they not be the diameter of the pubic hair of baby silk worms. Go for it!.

The back-up if used as external [Plugging in AC Adopter's socket will need more than the AC Adopter's out-put voltage. Please see the lable of AC Adopter . It may be much higher than you are assessing.

I have the same project in hand & finished just now successfully.

my AC Adopter's out-put voltage is 20V while battery voltage is 14.4V but I have to increase the back up battery's voltage to almost to 24V. back up battery need a series Diode to aviod back cuurent.

The circuit inside the laptop controls the charging-current of battery so higher than the battery volage are needed.

Important note:

It will only work with a laptop having common type of Adopter plug [just 2 pin].

In some of dell laptops a special plug with additional Sense pin will not work & accept unless you have the sense circuit in back-up battery as it is in AC Adopter.

I have also tried for a friends Dell laptop but not succeeded.

I need 19v for a 11.1v battery.

What type of diode did you use?

Yes, it does have the normal 2 pin connector.

Further to my reply:

If you like to connect directly to Internal battery you can but at least one cell extra for the reason that

it is advised to connect a series diode in all the sources. But in this case can't modify [& never try to modify] the internal battery

as it has a sophisticated circuit inside to regulate the charge rate; stop charging or bring it to Trickle Charge when charged fully;

monitor temperature & act to cut-off the battery circuit for safety; Battery condition Indicating etc etc.

For all these & may be more functions you will find a circuit-board inside; a self-reset-Fuse; 4/5 miniature LEDs; a thermal cutout

& more.

Battery has at least 4 terminals; 2 Main connections & 2 or more Sense/control connection.

And if you can get proper cells used in battery; old worn-out cells [though the inter-connections are spot-welded] can be replaced by carefully soldering.

In one case I was succeeded to get good cells in a defective battery [its PCB was damaged].

Not all rechargeable batteries have the same voltage rating or same recharge characteristics. Save yourself the cost of a new laptop and buy the proper battery pack... There is a ton of stuff on rechargeable batteries from lead acid technology through Lithium ion technology available free on the net. A few minutes should convince you to not screw with it...

Your making a backup battery?

If you do, you should test that one throughly before installing it into your laptop - because it is possible to burn out your laptop's MB...
