Take a look at what ASME itself has to say about this subject. Specifically, refer to the "Why get ASME GDTP Certified?" section on this page.

You should know that from a part producer's view it lets them use good parts that might otherwise be rejected. This is more important in plastic part design than metal, because plastic moves around more as it changes temperature.

While it's important to design, it's real payoff comes in inspection and assembly.

Get certified!

Hey good idea.... for me too.

Anyone here taken it, do you have any study guides to recommend besides the "book" itself?

Yes.

Did the prep class and the 4 hour exam. It wasn't pleasant! But very, VERY usefully.

Now "they", (Design, MFG, QA) think I'm some kind of the GD&T guru. So I'd say it does give some advantage. (Honestly GD&T is so...miss understood that all I really know is where to look in ASME 14.5M Standard for explanation.)

Good luck!

If you have the opportunity to become certified and it is the dierction you want to take then do it for sure.

The certification can help you get a job and the knowledge will help you keep it.

Hello bharath0205:

I think you have the right idea. To work in that area though you must be observant and measure over and over again. As was mentions plastics perhaps more than anything is demanding to try and make a product which looks great and it actually stands up without leaning one way or another! You thing you have it sorted and a new mix or type of plastic is used and it is back to the drawing board.

Most small house-hold radios, phones etc are plastic and it can be very difficult to make a product which stands out. It will be part of your job to choose the correct or most suitable 'poly' mix for an item.. And the finish on some of the plastic computer cases is so highly glossy it is hard to imagine it was some skillfully bloke like you will be if you work hard, who actually designed these cases!

Take care and good luck OK?
