2003 Chevy Silverardo - Change Engine Oil Light

01/29/2009 8:28 AM

My "CHANGE ENGINE OIL" warning came on, so I did. Now I have fresh oil but every time I start the truck, this warning comes on and stays there for a few seconds. I read the book and it says that the truck will track my oil changes for me and to be sure to 'reset' the warning light after I change the oil.

But the book doesn't say HOW to reset the warning light. Anyone know the trick?

Thanks, I thought I was going nuts.

By the way... last night, I pulled into the drive next to my wife's Nissan Maxmia and I started to push all kinds of buttons on the truck trying to reset that darn thing.. Then while I was doing this, the wife car started to act crazy. The lights started flashing and the driver window went down... no one was in the wife's car and she was sitting in the house... do you think the car and truck have a thing for each other?

Likely one of two things:

1. Some vehicles have a key hole in the dash instrument panel you put the key in. (Hopefully this is not it, as you should have noticed it).

2. I had a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Turbo. If the "malfunction" light came on, it required 5 warming / cooling cycles before the light would shut itself off.

There is a third option:

They have a sneaky reset that they don't tell you about, and you need to have the dealers computer doodad to reset. If that's the case, I personally would be moderately irritated.

From your description, #2 is most likely to me.

You can also go to most Autozone parts stores and get your "check engine" light and codes cleared for free.

I have 2001 silverado and the way you reset the light is to ; turn the ignition key to run with the engine off, fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds. if the change engine light flashes for five seconds , the system is reset.

Try this, turn the ignition key all the way to just before the engine begins to crank, dont crank the engine, just leave the key at that position. Now depress the gas pedal all the way 3 times in succession, with a 2 - 3 second gap in between each push. And if you did that correctly, your dash lights should flash to confirm that the reset is done. Switch off and remove the keys. Now put the keys back in and start engine, if all went well your oil change light should be reset. This works with most of the 2003 Chevys.

Turn the key to the on position - not all the way to start - and depress the gas pedal five times within 3 seconds. Turn the key off. That will reset the engine oil light.
