Smart LEDs from RPI

05/26/2005 4:45 PM

The journal Science is shining the spotlight on the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Scientists in Troy, NY have developed "smart" solid-state light sources that use scattered photon extraction (SPE) to get significantly more light from LEDs without requiring more energy. Although the article in Science requires a subscription, you can read about SPE for free at the LRC's web site.

Year of the LED

Hard to keep in mind that LEDs still have a lot of development. They just developed multi-color LEDs over at the University of California. This is leading the way to making white light LEDs, which is something of a quest for these engineers.
