Designing instrumentation for deep ocean research

05/27/2005 10:29 AM

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is using two remotely operated vehicles (ROV) to search for solid gases at 4,000 meters below sea level. The article is mostly about the design of and protection for precision instrumentation used in the search. This includes a discussion of laser Raman spectrometers and how they are enclosed in three pressure housings with a single-board computer, power components, and the 100mW 532 nm excitation laser; to survive and function in the unpredictable deep marine environment.

Gasses

I never thought about how the combination of cold and pressure could compress to form solid gasses. I wonder if you could run a large current through sea water at great depths and see if the oxygen and hydrogen would freeze before it surfaces or recombines.

Isn't that an oxymoron? :-)

Seems like it should be, but the article uses frozen gases and solid gases interchangeably.
