Malic Acid, Maleic Anhydride vs. Fumaric Acid

01/30/2009 11:29 AM

I had an application where I need to use Maleic anhydride but due to the extremely irritant fumes I was not able to do so. I've been told that maleic acid is similar to maleic anhydride and also that Fumaric acid comes from a reaction with the malic acid. What type of reaction can I expect if the maleic anhydride is substituted by fumaric acid? Can the results be similar to the ones obtained with maleic anhydride? Please help.

You said nothing about what you are reacting these chemicals with. What is the particular application where Maleic anhydride is used???
