I would recommend http://www.tri-plc.com/

Have been using their PLC's for 2 years now. Taught myself to program ladder logic using their free software

Also try www.entertron.com. I've used their PLCs for years and have received great support from them. They also provide free software and many programming examples are available for download. I've recently used three of their products to upgrade wastewater control systems.

You really should check out the Learning Pit:

http://www.thelearningpit.com/

They have free software for ladder programming and a wonderful Allen Bradley PLC emulator which works like RS Logix (called LogixPro)for a ridicuously low cost. It includes animated simulations which work off of what you have programmed. Very cool! There are also links there to some of the other sites mentioned in this forum.

Do you have any particular PLC brand, evenif the logic and the ultimate goal is the same. The programing language is different depending on the PLC hardware and software you choose. If you want to use Schneider automation products, they have a free download soft ware and a lader logic programming guide please check the attached link

On a similar subject to the original post, I have a PLC, an old one and I'm trying to make it work without spending an arm and a leg on propritary software.

It's an AEG Modicon Micro, 110CPU31101 with 16 ins and outs. I hooked up power and it turns on, but I'm trying to figure out how to communicate with the thing. I hooked it up to COM1 using an adapter from an ethernet cable, but no luck. Does anyone know if there is some way to "go back end" on this and work my way into COM1? Or, I could hook it up directly with an ethernet cable, and then assign an IP address to it, but I don't know how to assign it an IP address because I can't see it yet.

Maybe someone know where I can get some code to talk to these things?

Thanks.

The Modicons that we use have a custom adapter for the COM1 hook up. If you need the pin-outs, let me know. As for software, you might want to check out http://www.fast-soft.com/ for an alternative to the PRoWorx line of software.
