Numerical Methods

02/01/2009 3:04 AM

Hi,I'm a studying Chemical engineering bachelors in India(3rd year). Now,I've got a subject as one of my practical papers -"Numerical methods using C" where we have to write codes in C which when executed can solve equations or any other problems using standard numerical methods. For now we do not have any material from which we can know about these codes. So if anyone can help me out by atleast giving me the names of the books or access to any online materials I'd be very grateful. It's kind of urgent so faster the reply better shall it be.Thanks in advance.& I've also given a sample problem which happens to be my 1st assignment. If anyone could solve it, it would be even more helpful. Thanks again.

Solution of Linear System by Gauss Elimination method and Gauss-Seidel iterative method: Steady-state solution of isothermal CSTR in Series in which a first-order reaction is taking place.

Step 1- you try to understand the principles of the methods you listed as mathematical procedure. All books about maths describe them.

Step 2- you translate what you understood in a "C" programme.

Step 3- you check results

Step 4- you do your student work on your own since CR4 does NOT make the work of students

It is possible to get a counsel if you have problems but for such simple prog if you know programming in "C" you should not have any difficulty.

Good luck

Nick Name,

Very nice and succinct reply. You get a GA from me. My only added comment for this student is this. After doing his homework, any question that his professors can't answer to his satisfaction, can be asked here. We'll gladly give him a myriad of answers. Some of them may even be correct.

I too gave you a good answer for that one. There are generally a lot of cook books containing algorithms in a variety of languages, if the poor guy has to learn how to program, how to program in C, and how to understand the math behind it all, he is probably in a sorry state.

Very good address.

I found when needed different sources in my library as well.

The reason I did NOT gave a source is NOT because I do not want to help but because the best help for a student is to let him learn.

We should make the difference between a student whose main activity is "learning" and an engineer whose main activity is "solving". I would have indicated one or more sources for an engineer to help him reduce the project time and come earlier to a solution.

I sincerely think that it is a bad service to give to a student pre chewed stuff. I apologize if I hurt somebody but .....

Last year I gave a help to a student by indications and corrections after he did his work and he got the max note but he did his work first and demonstrated that he understood the problems by his following steps.

Recommend you write the appropriate differential analytical equations and put them in numerical form. Then apply standard numerical techniques to solve. Whether you use C or Fortran it shoulnt make a difference.

I have a book titled "Numerical Methods in C", somewhere in my "library"! If you would like more information, let me know, and I will find the book and send the publisher's information to you.
