Optimum thickness of insulation

02/02/2009 3:58 AM

What would be the optimum thickness of insulation for the steam pipe insulation (rock wool) of surface temperature about 350 C for the conservation of energy.I need outer surface to be touchable.Different softwares give a thickness about 4 to 5 inches which is difficult to apply and very costly.

In the different books about heat transfer you have formula giving the temperature on the out side as function of internal wall temperature and conductibility of the wall.

What you have to consider is the outer temperature (for a hand 50°C is already "hot") and the values for rock wool which you find in the book. In one of previous comments a book was recommended and it can be downloaded for free. It is a very good book. The authors are John.H.Lienhard IV and V.

In the energy saving analysis the insulation is dimensioned so that only X% of the carried energy will get lost. This leads to a thicker layer in order to reduce convection losses to the environment.

hey..

can u provide me some data to solve your problem as following below:

1. Average heat capacity of fluid

2. fluid viscosity

3. thermal conductivity of fluid

4. thermal conductivity of pipe

5. Inner radius of pump

6. Mass flow

7. Transfer coefficient out side the pipe

8. overall heat transfer coefficient

9. length of the pipe

10. inlet temperature

i need this data to calculate for optimum thickness of insulation. because i have a excel sheet to calculate the thickness of insulation

The optimum of anything is that which achieves the most economic balance between capital cost, including discounted cost of removing and recycling the asset at the end of its life, and the operating cost. It will vary with the economic conditions prevailing at the location of the asset.
