Remote Power Supply Recommendations

02/03/2009 11:39 AM

Hello,

I'm a technician by trade and now I've found myself needing to purchase a rack mounted remote power supply. Can anyone make some suggestions? All I need is 12VDC at 3.5 Amps max... LOL It will be powering some remote sensors located in a building and will be rack mounted.

Also, how is/are these units connected to the wires from the conduit? Bus connectors?

Any and all information is appreciated.

Type in "DC Power Supply" in the search window of:

www.newark.com or www.DigiKey.com and pick amoung the offerings.

Both are great vendors with fast delivery and good prices. There are many others as well. (could also try www.alliedelec.com )

Good luck with your project!

Its easy for anyone to get such power supply at any places. not expensive, smaller size, light weight.

But if you hope to get a correct wire, maybe a problem,

how long is the sensors? if its long, you have to take account of voltage drop on the line. because some sensor require mor strickly voltage level. and interference.

Try http://www.powerbox.com.au/ very reliable. We use them all the time.

Why don't you check out the older series of HP linier power supplies, there are plenty available on Ebay.

They have options for remote control variable voltage and current and remote sensing for voltage [not sensors]and are very stable with low ripple output.

You will be able to adjust for any variables in your wiring.

There are many different suppliers of power supplies and they all work well to varying degrees. Remember though, the supply will maintain 12 only at the output terminals of the supply not at your remote sensors. Provide suitable gauge wires for the voltage drop.

Since you have a variety of sensors, I'd recommend isolating each branch at the supply with a fuse or maybe a resettable PTC thermal fuse (e.g. Bourns MF-R series.) This way when a gremlin shorts one branch on your sensor network, all of the sensors are not turned off by the power supply's over current protection.

Walts Worker did not say that he need remote sensing. Only "remote sensors". He needs to cite how far away the load is (length of wire run?). At less than 3.5A, remote sensing may not be necessary. Astron makes a nice line of power supplies, but don't recall that they do 19" rack mount options.

As with too many inquiries, not enough info is provided to give a good opinion. Lot of guessing.

Hello Again,

Sorry I've been out sick for 2 weeks. The situation is that we'll have these IR sensors placed throughout the museum and lengths can be as long as possibly 750ft and maybe even longer. They IR sensors use very little current, something like 25mA each, total load is like 3.1A but distributed.

The contractor is wanting a power supply installed within the rack that houses all the audio and computers for the Soundscapes audio system. Maybe I have the term wrong but I would like a rack mounted power supply for all those remote sensors. I've been looking but Grainger, Digikey and others do not have what I'm looking for. Their supplies are high current and/or high voltage. I look over the responses.

I expect about 1 to 3 volts drop, but the contractor says that's not a problem... I know better but they are insisting that it will be fine...

Thanks but any more suggestions are always appreciated.

Walts,

Acopian makes some reasonably priced, 19" rack mounted supplies. www.acopian.com If you find the voltage drop to distant sensors are not unacceptable you might consider on these loads a local DC/DC converter to locally regulate. (same company) As I mentioned earlier Acopian is but one of many companies doing this.

Thanks!

Looks like this will do it:)
