Addressable Relay / Breaker Combinations

02/03/2009 12:28 PM

Is anybody making a combination relay and circuit breaker that would fit a standard circuit breaker panel? It would sure make some power consumption controls a bit easier... (common control voltage coil offerings?)

Hello NotUrOrdinaryJoe:

Not sure if this is what you are after. Can you give me an explanation of what you want to do please? Using your phrase as a search filter it brings back lots of things that are almost certainly relevant. If I knew what you want and what you have to work with and combine, I have somewhere to go. OK?

This below, is the search site returns. Let me know how you get on OK?

Take care and good luck..........................

What size breakers are you referring to? "Breakers" could mean 15A 1 pole 120V residential breakers or 3000A 480V Insulated Case industrial breakers.

Hello JRaef and babybear,

I'm primarily interested in single pole breakers up to 20 A. That being said, I would hope to find a 3Ø breaker for 480 volt circuits, all compatable with an existing breaker panel structure. The preference would be to minimize the labor and component cost to upgrade existing panels so that they could be operated by a power management computer or some other remote control device.

For instance, a lot of people use the breakers as light switches. But I'm not trying to reset the breaker remotely. I just want a relay I can address built within the breaker structure, while retaining the overcurrent protection.

Hello NotUrOrdinaryJoe:

Just to get things clear for me..................I am used to the breakers in the UK. Not so familiar with the US ones. You say you want single pole 20A? Should be no problem. But then you mention the 30A for a 480 V system. Or is the whole system 480 V? And three phase?

I am asking whether you think you can put a three phase line into a single phase breaker box? You may know about it but anyone checking it out wont and it could lead to a nasty accident.

Sorry for the queeries.

No one makes a combination molded case relay/breaker to retrofit in an older existing panel, but Cutler Hammer and Square D both make that type of equipment.
