The Atlantic Ocean. One term is used on the western shores of it, and the other on the eastern.

Technically, they are the same. Electrical engineers following the European standard call it earthing while those using the American one call it grounding.

There is no difference between 'earth' and ground' except linguistically between American and British english. Both are usually translated as 'terre' in French.

Literally, both mean "connected to earth." Now, someone might tell you that "grounding" is for DC while "earthing" is for AC. Ridiculous! In my country, we use both European and American standards. However, since traditionally, we are more incline to the American standard, we always use the term "grounding" even when specifying HV substation equipment to European manufcturers and they understand perfectly what we mean.
