2001 Mitsubishi Galant - Engine Cool Down

02/04/2009 11:50 AM

my brother owns a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant and the problem is once he cuts the car off it wont run again until the engine completely cools down and sometimes it cuts off while driving. we initially thought it to be the fuel pump so we replaced the pump, filter, and screen but the problem still persists. what might be the problem and how can it be fixed?

This sounds potentially computer related. Perhaps one of the engine temp sensors is bad.

This would be a good time to check or have them checked.

Another possibility is a plugged catalytic converter.

Have some one read the computer's memory of trouble codes. Don't guess, diagnose.

that's an OBD2 car (on board diagnostics gen2)

a scan tool can read history codes and data stream

you should be able to determine what's missing.

a data logging function is available as well

Prob a weak sensor or ignition componnent heat soaking

I had the same problem with my ford lynx before..engine will stall suddenly..I brought it in for service, replaced fuel filter and still had the same problem..until they checked it with their computer and found out that the Intake air temperatre (IAT) sensor is the culprit.
