2006 GMC Sierra - Sunroof Stopped Working

02/04/2009 6:44 PM

The sunroof had been working but does not seem to work at all any more. I think with a good wiring diagram and locations of the relays and modules the problem could be figured out. However I have not been able to find an aftermarket repair manual for that truck anywhere (6.6L Duramax Diesel). Does anybody know where to start?

I'm going to take a stab and guess it is out of warranty?

Sunroofs have been the bane of my existance, having rebuilt several.

The fact that it is diesel is immaterial, and most aftermarket shop manuals do not have anything like the detail they used to, so relay locations and connector locations are right out.

For manuals your best shot (I hate to say) is either the shop manuals from the dealer or there are some aftermarket publishing houses that discount dealer shop manuals.

Or we can help -

Start with the basics - does it make ANY noise when you try to use it?

Have you checked the fuse?

There are only so many places to get electrical power to that sunroof. The two front pillars, and the two rear posts are the only logical places. My first guess would be the front pillars. Look in the kick panels on the sides of the front foot rests. Behind the trim panels you can find the wiring that runs up the pillars. There will be two wires used. The two wires will be heavier than the typical wires used for lighting. You will need to test the wires with the switch in the activated position.

If the access to the switch is easier, test for power at the switch. Test in the key on position. Test all the wires. One should be live whenever the key is on. Good luck.

Thank you. I have checked the fuses etc. The main problem is that it is a salvage title that I got for a good deal but it does have a few little qwerks. I am quite sure the sun roof worked before all of the body work was done leaving me to think it is a connection or something similar. Your input is appreciated.

Welcome to CR4. You have missed my often stated rules of auto repair.

Rule #1 The last guy that touched it screwed it up. Try to determine what areas of the truck the body shop was working at. Go to that area and look for a disconnected wire plug, or a relay left unconnected. My guess would be to look under the hood in the firewall area, or anything attached to the front fenders/ wheel-wells. Good luck.

Autozone has a "do it yourself" section on their WEB site that has wiring diagrams included. Best place to find free wiring info.

AHAH!

Back to BobCs answer - if there was bodywork start loking for the unplugged connector1

And the last post is especially true if I was the one working on it - what DID I touch last...hmmm

And thanks for the autozone tip! GAs all around!

Actually what is generally needed right after the wiring diagram, but very difficult to find is a connector map with locations.

http://www.alldata.com/ They sell a years service for your vehicle. Cost appx. $29.95 per year. Download the wiring diagram and print a copy.

Helms Inc. sells manuals. but they don't have wiring diagrams. I've observed manuals on
