UPS locking / proprietary software

11/02/2006 7:03 PM

I'm Rick Romell, a newspaper reporter (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) writing about current litigation over locking / proprietary software on the UPS systems made by MGE and Eaton/Powerware. Both have sued a Wisconsin service company, JT Packard, for alleged copyright infringement and theft of trade secrets. JT Packard, in turn, accuses MGE and Eaton of unlawful anti-competitive actions.

One of JT Packard's claims is that both MGE and Eaton didn't tell customers before their purchases that only the manufacturer would be able to service the equipment even after the warranties expired.

I'm very interested in speaking with people about their experiences with these issues. Please contact me at rromell@journalsentinel.com.

This sounds very much like the people who made ink cartridges with simple chip circuits in them that told the printer when they were empty and would not work even when people refilled them with Other People's Ink (OPI). The cartridge makes wanted to force people to pay big $$ for 5 cents worth of ink.

As you can see, buying OPI can cause sterility, blindness, intemperate rage and many other bad things. The worst thing it does is save the buyers a lot of $$

The Multi-Nationals are mostly involved in this iype of practice;like selling spares at much higher rates than the original ones market price; Rubbing-off Part # or marking;

getting off-the-shelf components & modifying those by [eg ICs ] forming inverted-pins. This problem I had faced in repairing a DMM of well known company. Their catalogue gave a pt# of an off-the-shelf IC, when I replaced it did not work. I traced the power input connections & found that the IC pins were inverted. I re-Formed for inverted-pins & it worked.

What to say about such Multi-nationals.

Intel is world-renowned company for CPUs. I am facing problem of overheating even @ 15 deg C environment. They have replaced twice but the problem is not resolved.

I checked in discussion-groups & found that this model [Pentium 4, 3.2G Prescot] is having problem of over-heating even in UK & reported by a number of people.

Vendor here has contacted fromtime to time but they could not resolve it & not changing its COOLER with a better Temperature-wise
