Lateral Thinking

02/06/2009 2:03 AM

1. AVOIDING THE TRAIN:

A man was walking along a railway track when he spotted an express train speeding towards him. To avoid it, he jumped off the track, but before he jumped he ran ten feet towards the train. Why?

2. THE PILOT'S SON:

A man and his son were traveling on a scheduled flight across the Atlantic. The man asked the flight attendant if his son could have a look inside the cockpit. The boy was allowed to do this and the pilot gladly explained about the plane and its controls. After the boy left, the pilot turned to the co-pilot and said to him, "That was my son."

How could that be?

3. THE LOCKED ROOM:

A man is dead in a puddle of blood and water on the floor of a locked windowless room. What happened?

4. A SAFE PLACE:

Frank leaves home. When he tries to return, a man wearing a mask blocks his path.

1.) What is Frank doing?
2.) What is the masked man's occupation?
3.) Where is Frank's "safe place?"

Even if pilot is a man, why this is not possible? Pilot may be a real father

The normal protocol is for a passenger to ask the attendant, who would then ask the pilot, who is the captain of the ship. The pilot wouldn't be asking the attendant this question.

3) Away from the fire.

Technically, he would be "safe" on third. But if he tries and is out at home, then your answers are much more accurate.

#1. Traditional answer is the pilot is the lad's mother.

#2. Well, I tend to agree with Guest from post #1, the gentleman was on a bridge.

#3. I would surmise he slipped and fell in the bathroom. Unless, of course, he lives in an igloo, then I could see how the ice fell on him.

#4. Frank's playing Baseball, the man with the mask is the Catcher, and his "safe" place is Home Plate.

Bathrooms have windows

I propose cold storage - it is likely to have ice - also on roof.

Neat puzzlers -- and good answers!

#2 reminds me of another similar puzzle: Mr. Smith & his son are in a traffic accident. The son is taken to a nearby hospital, but the Emergency Room doctor won't treat him claiming, "This is my son!" Generally, these type puzzles only work in English. In other languages, the doctor would be identified as a male or female doctor. For example, in German, a male physician is an Arzt. A female physician is an Ärztin.

#3 is a real puzzle. I am not sure of the correct answer, but along with the other plausible solutions suggested already, I offer:

a. The morgue flooded (but this doesn't really account for the blood.)

b. The funeral home flooded, but this has a similar problem as a.

c. The man was murdered with a large chunk of ice in a refrigerator which has since broken/been shut off.

d. The best and most accurate answer I can come up with to the question, "What happened?" is: The man died in a locked room in a pool of blood and water.

I think that number 3 can be explained by the traditional "stabbing through the body by using an icicle" method. An old plan, but a good one as far as fingerprints go.

Not that I've made use of this...
