What qualifies you "to build a lithium battery"?

Did you Google "Lithium Cobaltate"?

Due to the complex nature of the internal workings of batteries, and the wide variance in performance due to the smallest of errors in material thickness/composition/uniformity, I really must wonder if making a battery yourself is really the best thing to do? I hope I am wrong, & am misinterpreting your question, but if you are asking where to get materials for a battery, IMO, you might have greater, more important questions later. Perhaps you should just buy some pre-built batteries. They should save you TONS of money on calendar presses, etc.

In all seriousness: be careful. Although Lithium-X batteries often use less caustic electrolytes, etc., they are not without risk.

Good Lord. The man wants to experiment and build his own battery and all he gets is a couple of louts saying, duh! why don't you just buy one? A regular couple of Thomas Edisons aren't you. I say answer his question or shut up. Who knows, maybe he can come up with a process that will enable all of us to build our own batteries and change something from impracticle to practicle.

Hello Ionizer,

Happy hunting. Like the idea. The guys concerns are well founded if poorly expressed. I don't know if you have ever handled lithium? Might I suggest you make your experiments very small to start with. Lithium is very reactive and the batteries can explosively discharge. Not knowing your level of knowledge and experience set off their safety alarms.

My next question is have you ever done any hazardous materials handling? PPE is a must have. It sounds like you have done some home work.

One thing to consider is plan for the worst case scenario because you are working alone. No one to catch your mistakes or help if things go wrong. One guy died in our lab because he left a valve open and returned to close it. His lungs froze before he could turn around and exit. He was suppose to consult his buddy before he acted, instead he reacted without thinking and died.

Enough of the Danger Will Robinson you are storing energy in fire metal. Let us know if there is anything you need to know about. Even MSDS sheets can be confusing to different fields of use.

Brad
