The Best CNC Machine for Doors and Cabinets

02/09/2009 11:16 PM

I am looking for the best CNC Machine (and compatible computer software) for the right price that can handle mortising/prepping up to 2 1/4" thick custom wood doors/windows of varying sizes etc., create and cut cabinet cut-lists. Currently we are using Vectorworks 2008 and AutoCad 2005.

the best CNC Machine

The best CNC router for mortising and hinging passage doors would be a 5-axis machine with > 20hp spindle (Komo, CR Onsrud) or you would need horizontal aggregates (Benz) in a tool changer to machine the latch mortise yet still be able to do hinge routing on a 3 degree beveled door edge.

the right price

I'm not really sure what that means, but if you want a cheaper price look at dedicated hinge routing and mortising jigs or for a higher production level, machines like(Norfield, Clary, Ruvo) or entry level CNC routers (Shopbot).

create and cut cabinet cut-lists

These are best done with nested based flow-through machines (Komo, CR Onsrud, Thermwood) which have a large bed, usually 5' x 10' or larger, a large vacuum pump around 40hp which draw vacuum through a spoilboard of medium density fiberboard (MDF) to hold any type of sheet material for machining. The cuts are typically extended only 0.005" deeper than the material thickness to prevent plowing into the spoilboard. The spoilboard gets resurfaced with a 'flycut' when needed which is a 4" diameter cutter that removes all cut and drill scars.

Residential and commercial casework cabinetry is designed with a manufacturing software (Cabnetware, CabinetVision, KCDW, E-Cabinet) which determines all the machining operations, nests the parts on the proper sheet materials and creates machine code for primary and secondary machines. The parts are drilled, dadoed, cut out and labeled on the nested based CNC operation. Some parts require a second face operation (machining on the other side) which is typically done on a pod and rail type secondary machining process.

Komo makes a good product. Myriads software choices. No help there. Sorry
