PSI at Periphery of Centrifugal Pump Impeller

How would you calculate the pressure in PSI at the peripheral of an centrifugal pump impeller if it was sealed from discharge? In essence, a rotating element with fluid passage and vanes, fully flooded but sealed from discharge.

Variables: Dia. of impeller, Sp. Gr., RPM.

I'm looking for a formula that I could could plug in the variables and get the pressure.

Check the "dead-head" pressure on the pump operating curve (chart that is characteristic of each pump - is available from manufacturer/supplier)

There is no universal equation for pumps - it all depends on the specific design (dia, # of blades, angle of blades, ..............)

You need the pump curve.

I agree with guest.

If you deadhead the pump the reading inside the pump housing will reflect the pressure at the outside diameter of the impeller.

I also agree with Guest. The pressure would be the "dead head pressure" on the pump curve.

Please understand that operating a pump dead headded can lead to cavitation problems which will likely shortly destroy the impeller and housing as well as excessive heat leading to damage to the pump and possibly the fluid involved.

It is far better and safer to put in a relief valve or recycle valve and recirculate some of the fluid to keep the temperature down and the flow to something reasonable.

"pump curves" have been mentioned in the other two posts.

A word of caution regarding these curves. They are produced under laboratory conditions, with everything optimized.

You will rarely obtain the same results as are shown on the curves.

Pump curves are great for predicting performance and load at various flows and gravities, but don't be disappointed if your results vary.

I agree with most posts.............all I would like to add is that in the start up procedure for larger centrifugal pumps whether vertical or horizontal pumps............always start the pump with the discharge shut and slowly open the discharge once the pump is running okay..............this saves early replacement of wear rings.
