Steel Tube Api 5CT grade J55

02/14/2009 2:27 PM

We are a Screwpile installers in Ireland and the UK. The steel tube we currently use is API 5CT Grade J55 (73mm OD x 5mm WT) and is imported in from the USA and Canada. It is getting unviable to import it from there. We were wondering if there is another type of steel tube of similar grade available more local to us. The diameter does not necessarlly have to be 73 OD (it can be greater but not less). We can adapt our driving sockets to suit any diameter pipe. It is imperative that the steel is the same grade or better. It does not have to be seamless for our use.

Looking forward to you suggestions

What you are using is what we in the States call 2 7/8 inch "production tubing", usually in thirty foot joints with 8 or 10 round threaded connections box by pin, 55 ksi yield.

You might find it easier to obtain AISI 1020 welded and drawn over mandrel (DOM) tubing. 70 ksi yield because of the cold drawing operation. Don't know about the thirty foot length but being low carbon, it's easy to weld.

Good luck and let me know and I'll look further if need be. I doubt you'll find a much cheaper material but I'm sure other alternatives exist.

Cheers
