"OD Controlled Pipes" and "OD Based Pipes"

Where did you see these terms?

In what context were they used?

One of our client says that the OD Based Pipe and OD Controlled pipes are not same. OD Based pipes are cheaper compared to OD Controlled pipes. OD Controlled pipes are having less tolerence on OD compared to OD based.

I had not heard earlier and cannot find any supporting standard....

Your client is not mixing up "tubes" and "pipes" is he/her?

OD in a pipe refers to "Outer Diameter". Pipes come in standard sizes.

It has been thoroughly covered in quite a few previous threads, the gist being

- Pipe and Tuve are both with defined OD - I dont know whether you want to call it controlled or based.

- Both are with defined thickness- only in case of pipe, these thicknesses are callse schedules - but that is uniquely translated to thickness.

- The tolerance on OD of pipes is generally much more lax than that on the tube.

- Crossection of both are circular (earlier there were non-circular pipes these are now re-named as ducts)

The cost of the tube is usally more than pipe for same dimensionsa and material.

I have never heard these terms used before. All I could think of was that they were referring to controlling the final OD of a pipe with less tolerance for some strange reason although I can't imagine why. I wonder if they want OD controlled fittings too? Seems like you would require both if you would require one. Please let us know what you find out about this.

This international Engineering forum is not in a position to establish <...cost difference...> in any meaningful way; one of the big variables is the distance between source of supply and the consumer, and even the country and its currency are being withheld from it.

Solving the problem needs a Purchasing Officer and a telephone.

Invitation declined.
