Best Plastic for Automotive Air Leakage Testing

02/17/2009 12:22 AM

I would appreciate some advice. I need to manufacture plastic templates in order to seal off a painted auto body shell prior to pressurising and measuring the air leakage. I would like to form the material to follow the shape of the apertures. Can you suggest a material that I can use? Must be able to handle a certain amount of abuse in a production environment.

I don't think rubber will work as it won't hold the shape of the apertures. I intend to try Polypropylene sheeting 4mm thick.

Lexan? Relatively shatter resistant.

ABS is relatively inexpensive, though not as inexpensive as polypropylene. It is easier to bond to ABS than polypropylene, in case you need to bond some kind of seal onto the plastic. Lexan is more impact resistant and tougher than ABS, but less chemically resistant and it does scratch fairly easily. Nylon is impact resistant, tough, scratch resistant, but harder to bond to than ABS. They are all available in sheet stock. I guess which is best depends on what you need it to do.
