Hyster Forklift - Electrical Problem

02/17/2009 3:28 PM

I have a Hyster forklift model ex40xl that was left in the rain and now will not go forwards or reverse. It has power and the solenoids are clicking but goes nowhere. Anyone know the problem?

Yea, you left it out in the rain. Is there power getting to the motor? Motor could have been damaged by the rain. Or maybe the battery was damaged by the rain and is not taking a full charge.

Check the brake on the motor--If it has one--The motor may be trying to turn, but the damp, sticky or swollen brake may be stuck. Have had plenty of grief and finally resolved it by storing the equipment in a heated building.

If you can find any fuses in there - check them. If there are solenoids clicking, it sounds like it's trying to do something. The power available from those batteries is huge - if nothing's groaning, grinding or smoking, I'd suggest there's no power getting to the motors.

Could be corroded contacts preventing power flow. Overall sounds as if it needs a look at obvious points, like corrosion on contacts, and maybe a push in high gear to turn things over. (or real slow push) I'm not really familiar with that particular machine. Lubrication of some parts may also be called for. I am under the impression it is an electric forklift. You say it has power? Does it for fact have all the power it needs?

More likely the motor controller or one of the associated controls. Check the speed pot if it was full of water maybe shorted out. If so the controller will sense the short and shuts down. I don't know what model controller is in it from the model number. There is a company in York Pa called Flight Systems they will have manuals for sale to troubleshoot the control. Google it they have a web site. Will repair it if you do find the problem or provide repair parts.

I have experience with a 1976 Yale standup electric. The motor speed control produces a pulsing sound that is easily detectable. Are you seeing arcing on the main contacts? The battery cables are soldered to prevent corrosion: clamps will allow small current to flow but arc out when a large current is drawn. Also check each connector from cell to cell. The motor might also have ring terminals with corrosion causing arcing and no power. The main solenoids also have smaller contacts for forward/reverse sensing and they need to be properly aligned and clean. You probably will not see arcing from them in normal operation. Check all mechanical contacts.

I will monitor this thread if you still have not resolved your problem.

It is definitely the controller. It got wet. Unplug the battery from the machine and hope the water has not caused a permanent short. Dry out the machine completely. You can either wait, or put a fan on the electronics ( gentle stream of air ) in a day or two the machine will be dry and should run fine. genfork.com
