Survey Sheds Light on PCB Design

11/06/2006 8:23 AM

About 60% of respondents to a new Flomerics survey say that thermal and electromagnetic compatibility requirements are usually in conflict in the design of circuit boards. Noting that 10-30% of PCB projects were late and over budget, the survey reports that respondents blamed design changes as the major culprit. On the plus side, nearly two thirds of respondents described communications between electronics engineers and mechanical engineers as good or very good.

The problem I always had was that the PCB "draftsman" was typically not an engineer which created inevitable shortcomings in the result. Fortunately, board size in most of my projects has shrunk and I now "design" my own boards that come out exactly the way I want them. I realize this is not practical in all cases but it is virtually impossible to tell someone all the things not to do wrong. Still, it always ends up taking longer than I anticipate but is usually much closer to perfect when I'm done.
