The Johnstown Flood

05/31/2005 9:00 AM

On May 31, 1889 a wall of rushing water three stories high struck the city of Johnstown, PA. The source of the water was a failed earth and rock dam 14 miles above the city. Most of Johnstown was destroyed and over 2,200 people were killed. In terms of lives lost, it was the worst civil disaster in American history.

Rare Event

I think it's amazing this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. With all the earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and tornados, I'm always suprised as much survives as often times does.
