Sumatran "corpse flower" ready to bloom in San Francisco

05/31/2005 10:10 AM

The world's stinkiest flower is set to bloom at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers. This titan arum, or corpse flower as it is more commonly known, is 10-years old, approaching 5 feet high, and ready to bloom for the first time in 2 years. The pungent odor of the corpse flower is generally compared to that of rotting meat, and it blooms for only two or three days. The Conservatory believes it will bloom this upcoming weekend, so check it out if you can.

Looking at the picture all I can think of is "Feed me Seymour. Feed me NOW!!"
Personally for me to be in a room that smells like rotting flesh the bloom better be beautiful, but it's fairly plain. Here are some pictures of the one that bloomed in the UK last year.

Interesting that one of the sponsored links at the bottom of the article's page was "X-Files Abduction."

Stinky Flower

The funny thing is that people line up around the block to see this thing. A veritable cash (dead) cow for the conservatory.

No sense of adventure

If I was in reasonably close proximity to the corpse flower, I'd check it out. Unfortunately, I'm on the other coast.
