New York State has just started using UHF RFID tags to track domestic deer and elk on cervid farms. New York's Department of Agriculture and Markets hopes these tags will enable them to inventory populations, follow their movement, and to better trace and head off diseases such as chronic wasting disease (CWD). The program will begin with up to 1,000 tagged animals at 50 to 100 participating farms. The tags are 915 MHz, much stronger than previously used 134 kHz tags, which will allow for reading from up to 2 meters away.
