Using RFID to track deer populations

05/31/2005 11:08 AM

New York State has just started using UHF RFID tags to track domestic deer and elk on cervid farms. New York's Department of Agriculture and Markets hopes these tags will enable them to inventory populations, follow their movement, and to better trace and head off diseases such as chronic wasting disease (CWD). The program will begin with up to 1,000 tagged animals at 50 to 100 participating farms. The tags are 915 MHz, much stronger than previously used 134 kHz tags, which will allow for reading from up to 2 meters away.

Counting Deer

This seems like a good application for RFID. Speaking of deer . . . does anyone know of any "high tech" devices that are good for keeping the wild ones out of the path of your moving vehicle?

Here are a few. I have no experience with any, it just seemed like an interesting topic to research:

Hornet Deer Alert
Sav-a-life Deer Alert

and if that's not enough, here's a whole website devoted to avoiding deer collisions

Wow! Thanks. Stands to reason that there would be a market for this considering the cost of damaged vehicles, not to mention lost lives.

Deer Tagging

"which will allow for reading from up to 2 meters away." This doesn't seem that far. Wouldn't big numbers on an ear tag readable from 6 feet be a much cheaper solution?

Now I just need to make a really sensitive RFID receiver with some triangulation software and next hunting season should be a breeze....
