Getting Rid of Virus Doctor Online Malware

02/19/2009 3:34 PM

I thought about posting this anonymously, but better to confess my sins--do to injudicious web surfing. I've contracted Virus Doctor Online malware--MS tech support has been of little help, and my other choices seem to be paying for a removal tool from such as Enigma or PC Tools, or attempt a rather tedious manual removal method, which is probably beyond my pathetic skills--any suggestions for a free removal tool that actually works?

one of the best free anti-malware programs is:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I would be suprised if a full scan with it didn't work.

Have you tried Dr Web free version as I suggested? Follow my previous instructions that you need to do a full scan only.....

I am not sure if this works, it asks you to install another program, so i am weary of it

Try these 2 freeware:

SUPERAntispyware free edition from

http://www.superantispyware.com/

and AdvancedSystemCare 3.1.2 Free available for download from http://www.download.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_4-10407614.html

You will have to spent a little bit of your time for the installation and update of the SUPERAntiSpyware before use, but you will be glad of the result. The AdvancedSystemCare is a simpler and straightforward application.

Good Luck!

Re: Getting Rid of Virus Doctor Online Malware

I had to go through the registry virtually line by line, hunting down "gain" adware. When it came back, I hunted for anything that said "reboot" on it. I found that Vius Doctor and Gain and a few others will reload themselves upon re-boot.

And its not the web surfing...these things sit neatly on a lot of sites, but still come in mostly on emails. Personally I have no interest in the Nigerian millions, or the lottery wins and my bank account has never been shut down just because I didn't re-load all my information on some web site that mispells the word "assistance". But from time to time, I get a little Trojan or a little adware demon. Like gum on your shoe, it is annoying but rarely fatal.

There are some apps which can help in that search...."Hijack This", for instance is good, and for that matter, Reg Cleaner can narrow your search. A friend of mine told me once "yeah, you can spend a lot of time hunting for that stuff, or you can just back up your info, format C and reload the OS." Lots to be said for that method. Once you do it, you can why that is the preferred solution. Quick. Simple. Works if you have backed up your work. You DID back up your work right? Grin!

Regards, and good luck. I will evaluate some of those nice apps mentioned above. Sometimes they have issues with existing spyware stuff.

yes, backed up the files on external drive but no real recovery disc for operating system--kind of points to problem with preloaded software--I should have made a recovery disk first time I got ahold of this thing...

Try Ad-Aware. I use it regularly. It's purpose is to identify and get rid of SpamWare, such as the whole Gain family, but it also gets rid of some more persistent and malicious stuff that people like Grisoft (AVG, Virus protection) and Cyberhawk (watches for unauthorized registry edits, in real time) call virii, or other forms of malware. Between these three (all are free, and I've been using them for years, and nope, I've never even been offered money by any of them, and don't work for any of them. Never did.) my machine stays pretty clean, and runs fairly well, even though it IS a MicroSloth platform.

Still prefer Linux, but none of those will run on it, I believe. And my family wants an OS they can recognize, so Windoze it is, crashes and all.

I recently update my Ad-Aware and found that the latest version really slowed my PC down to a crawl. I don't mind that as long as I can "pause" it while working. But the stop/pause function did not work, so I have removed it completely.....I have found other software that works as well and does not slow my PC down (AMD 4400 X2 4GB RAM).

Using Dr Web regularly seems to keep a lot of things under my control.....

Hmmm. Haven't had that problem, myself, Andy. I have a 1/2 TB USB 2.0 drive that it also checks, along with my 160GB internal, so that takes a while to run a full scan on, and makes it slow, but it doesn't actually seem to be running any slower than before. Just covering more territory. And as far as I know (can't check now, as I'm not near that machine) I'm running the latest version (updated about a week ago) now.

Maybe you have two running programs that are causing friction?

The latest version stays resident, its a piece of crap.....the old one was great. If you still have the old one, it will be good for a month or two, but after that it will be too much out of date....

Search on the web for "Dr Web Free" and download the latest version, run it. It should clear most viruses, it even found ones that Kaspersky had ignored.......I would not be without it!!!

Found one that even Kaspersky ignored?

Kaspersky will need to hear about that.

Just for someone of the others that might not know this.

Run your computer in Safe Mode when running a scan and removal software. That will take out the malware on your computer and remove it from your registry so it won't rewrite itself each time you boot up.

Dr. Web Free found a couple of "batch" virus but did not remove the virus doctor online--malwarebytes will find it but not remove it, even when run in safe mode--may give some of the others a try next, but I'm more convinced than ever that I will have to go "thermonuclear" and reformat the HD

Did you setup Dr Web to delete or rename if it can't delete? Very important.....F9 I believe to access that....

A couple of months ago, I had a similar infestation. I followed instructions I gleaned by posting on the bleeping computer forum and using Malwarebytes download. In order to avoid the trojans from stalling the execution, you should download to a thumb drive, rename the file to an alias, then execute it from there. It worked well for me. There is one driver file that you will need to disable, but I don't recall it's name.

Good luck!

I've tried most of the downloads, no success--I'm going to contact Toshiba and see if they are able to supply me with a restore disc based on the serial number etc.--this seemed to be the recommended path by MS tech support as well--Thanks to all for your suggestions.
