Hydro Gear Transaxle

02/20/2009 1:52 AM

I have a Hydro Gear transaxle 150071 which has lost drive power. It goes for about 10-20 minutes and then loses all drive. I have a repair manual from Hydro Gear which is hardly of any use. I have changed the oil which was black and contaminated. Internal inspection reveals virtually no apparent wear. I polished the pump and on reinstallation have set all the Drive and brake settings as per the manual. Still no different. Can you suggest what I might try to fix this problem. The oil used is 20W50.

TIA

Does it overheat after 20 minutes?

Hi

1. Check oil pump pressure. under load and no load. I am not familiar with this particular type but some have oil pressure port.

2. Try single weight oil

Hi, The black oil indicates overheating!

Is the cooling in good condition, housing clean? (heat transfer) Under normal conditions approx 30% of the transfered power is transfered into heat.

If the standard cooling is in good shape it's internal leakage that causes additional heat and so overheating from the drive.

What particles have you found? is it wear from the pump like piston, pistonslipper, diskvalve or may be a small pice from a pressure relieve?

I hope this helpes a little. Lots off succes Harmen Beskers

hydrostatic transmissions are simple and reliable, but if any dirt or debris found its way into the unit, you've got trouble.

i would think the worn pump is giving sufficient flow to allow operation while the oil is cool.

once you reach operating temps, the internal leakage goes up, and no more go.

black and contaminated oil is not a good sign. the wear is sometimes hard to see.

usually the pistons are loose in their bores, or swash plate is grooved.

as wangito suggested, sometimes higher viscosity oil will help - if the unit is worn, no reason not to try.

(been there, done that...)

these links might help

if everything really looks ok, maybe an unloader or relief valve is sticking.

but usually "if the oil is black, the future is bleak"

wow, I should copywrite that!

good luck

Nice one:- "if the oil is black, the future is bleak"

Also "if the oil is black, the future is black"

or "if the oil is black, the future is too"

Hi,... I am in the same boat as you. So far I replaced the oil - this gave a very small imrovement in the power - it was a waste of time, then I jacked up the rear, removed the bottom of the transaxle, put in a new oil filter [ cleaned out the crud from the bolttom part of the casing , cleaned with brake cleaner the metal parts where the silicon sealer goes, put on a new sealer and put all back together]. With a new filter and fresh oil the transaxle is a lot better, however after about 30 minutes of running, the transaxle looses its power going up a hill, for now on flat areas it is ok... So my next move is to get a replacement 150071....
