How to send the output of a sensor to another place using internet protocol?

02/21/2009 6:22 AM

Hi guys! My assignment is to send the output of a sensor (temperature, humidity etc.) from the auditorium of my university to the control room using IP(internet protocol). Can anyone please help me out how I can do this?

Actually this is my final year project. I can't use modules like 2600 series. If I use this there will be nothing left for me to do. I want to implement this using pic microcontroller, programmed by myself. Please guide me for this.

Hi Sajeel,

The PIC18F97J60 family of uControllers have IEEE 802.3 Ethernet capability. They also have 0-3.3V analog inputs.

Boost the sensor voltage with Op-Amps or In-Amps to achieve the Analog Input range, wire it up, and figure out the programming and you're done.

Have you looked at something like Labview or RTWorks?

Don't forget that you'll have to power your circuitry in some fashion. You may have to actually demonstrate knowledge of linear circuitry to convert your local power to power compatible to the complete chip set. But since this is your senior project you surely have been taught all the knowledge you'll need to safely design and integrate a power supply.

When your done, why don't you post the IP address here so we can all admire the quality of your work and education.

Hi redfred,

You said: "When your done, why don't you post the IP address here so we can all admire the quality of your work and education."

That is a great suggestion! I am a ChE and have had no formal education in electronics, though it is my main hobby. I was thinking that if the OP is a senior year student, he should know the basics - e.g. power supply, AD conversion, Op-Amps, etc. I don't know why it would be so hard to find a PIC to do what he needed, but maybe he's just not that Internet savvy yet.

It would really be great if he did come back with his design and let us know how he did.

GA

I'm surprised this query didn't evoke the typical "homework" response.

I thought my remark screamed enough sarcasm to count as a "homework" response. How's this then, "If you paid attention in class you'd already know what to do. Wake up!" I did notice that nothing was mentioned about which school he/she's attending. I guess there's some spark of intellect.
