Your Life's Inspiration

02/21/2009 9:57 PM

Hi to all,

There's been a lot of stress in the workplace lately, some because of the recent economic dilemma, some because of poor management, some ... well, just because.

I wanted to try to put a positive spin on things. Probably for everyone, there was some pivotal point in their life, maybe as a child or young adult or later. Maybe it was a simple encounter, maybe a co-worker, maybe a family member, or maybe a long-term mentor who showed you more patience than you (we all) deserved at the time. Possibly it was an historical figure, who inspired you. Maybe it wasn't so much a person, but a place or event that steered your life.

What or who was a a pivotal point in your life that helped determine who you are today?

Of course, a follow up question might be, to whom are you that pivotal point in their life?

Hi DCad, good question, I've had a few people who have been mentors (but probably didn't know it) when I started out in Electronics. No one turning point as I feel there has always been the same inner child peering out from behind my eyelids with a sense of awe and curiosity. (And I like it that way)
The great enginneering feats and stories have always inspired. The lone engineer fighting againt beurocracy... Barnes Wallis, Frank Wittle. The great feats of the ancients, the pyramids etc.

An uncle who was an electrical engineer - I adored him and he used to loan me his college texts.

When it came time for college I was 28, married and father of two and full time Navy man, couldn't get to an engineering program.

Ended up in Mathematics - was taught by two distinctly different generations

Calculus and DiffyQ - old school Northrup Grumman engineer who used DiffyQ daily, carried a briefcase, wore a tie. Calculus - German engineer who was yanked out of school to work Peenemunde rocket program, then *relocated* by the Americans. Worked in the desert with Werner Von Braun, starched white short sleeve shirt, suspenders, butch haircut, never lost his accent and you will turn out beautiful proofs.

Advanced Algebra - Delorean driving Mr. Cool of the Feineman inspired generation. Distinctly Californian, hair slightly too long, colorful, Abstract number systems was spent with our feet on the desks staring at the ceiling creating number systems and testing them for consistency.

But because I knew aircraft systems I went into Customer Support for a huge avionics manufacturer. All been downhill from there!

I was inspired by Professor of Psychology Mr.Phadke who was faculty at Banking Institute in Mumbai. He taught us how to remain cool under any circumstance, even when something drastic happens to you.

This thinking helped me and my colleagues a lot in our carrier.

Because of the Many Inspiring novel written . Three Musketeers , Counte of Monte Cristo Etc and becasue his own personal larger than fiction life . I have always said one of the quickest routes to have ended racism in the US was to just place the statement behind the Three Musketeers Movie after every time it has been displayed on film , I think about 8 times now. Hellow DCad,

All beings excepting mankind goes on with life ,it comes and goes.As thinking animals ,we have so many sentiments and conceptualizations..Well the whats shaping one's destiny could be -hopes of life tomorrow,a plan for tomorrow,a zeal to reciprocate and contribure to society's goodwill,a sense of seeking acceptibilty and returns, responses from society, attitude to do better, a sense towards perfection and betterment,a sense to acceptance of others, learning lessons from failures, adversities, unbiased attitude , being geniune in conceiving right and wrong and be truthful, curiosity and innovative attitudes. The mentor whoms could be, mam and dad, family and relatives, well wishers, friends, colleagues, elders, teachers, gurus, inspiring past and present personalities even the irritating competitor-every ones in one's walk of life could potentially contribute to our attitudes and ment us.The ultimate drive is from a justified consious self which is everlasting.

I worked at a large Government owned facility that had an amazingly broad array of equipment. SEM, mechanical testing lab, centrifuge, helium leak detection, laser interferometer, robotics lab ,chemical analysis ,auger, high speed photo analysis and others.

It was good exposure to a range of things.

Hi DCaD,

I'm inspired by the old feats of engineering as mentioned such as the pyramids and figuring the distance from the earth to the moon. My other "drive" is the challenge to come up with a solution or answer for a new problem or issue we deal with here at my company in my department "Maintenance Engineering". It's a lot of fun and very rewarding for me when I am able to solve one of these. But, I have to be honest for myself, the largest single moment or person was when I was young and excepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior. That single part of me has really determined who and what I am now. My faith is the largest thing in my life followed by my family then work life. Guess a happy life really depends on your balance with all these things.

Thanks for asking!! Our life as engineers is really a balancing act.

Hi WB,

First, welcome to CR4. I look forward to seeing you here often.

I appreciate your comments and the motivations you list, but mostly I appreciate your personal testimony. Within any public forum you will find a strong mix of faiths (and lack thereof), but, for me, to best understand the creative process and the total scheme of 'why it all works' ... to better understand the social and historical nature of man and that which motivates us, one must begin to acknowledge the patterns, design, and the Creator behind it all. Thanks.

Kind regards ...

In general terms: All those people I have read about, and met, who are insatiably curious about "what makes the damn thing tick?".

Specifically: My father, who died last week. He was an EE who worked in the hydraulics industry for ~50 years. He understood that curiosity when it was my turn growing up to start asking that question. There is no telling how many electrical motors I lost the brushes to, trying to answer that question. But the greatest patience was when I took his (working at the time) watch apart to answer that exact question.

Hi KW,

First, condolences to you and those close to you at the passing of your father (I know you're very tired of hearing that). My mother passed on January 3 this year, and she, too, was a major part of my own curiosity nurturing. Not because she was technical, but, in her I found that there were no 'stupid' questions. There were times when we sat up all night just talking about anything and everything.

Oh, and about your father's watch Hmmm ... I once set the roof of our house on fire, launching a model rocket from just outside my bedroom window at night ... well, just because. May we all show the patience to others we have been shown.

Kind regards ...

Oh, yeah. I forgot one: An event, a job to be precise. The first day I started working for a copper mine, they shoved a half assembled Heathkit Robot (HERO) at me and said finish it, and make it do something.

That began my career in industrial programming.

Yes it was a great start. And one of the best times, because I was learning sooooo much. From the day I walked in, till the day I walked out, I don't think I ever had less than 4 projects going simultaneously.

That was the first time I was a "rockbrain", but not the last. First copper, then gold. Then I really got stupid, married a "Gee-ologist rockbrain", which demoted me to the "rock mule"!

yeah, that's a great feeling...someone throws a job at you that has had them all stumped and then you fix it.
I remember as a young test eng' there was a problem on a data logger in this burn in room.
Well they just chucked me in there....
I found someones stash of 'Gentleman's recreational magazines' in there.
Each test run took about 20 mins so they came in handy...eventually I fixed the problem and finished 'reading' all the mags.

Hi KW & D Cad,

Regret to learn that you both lost you dear father/mother last week. My heartily condolences to you and your family members.May God bless peace to departed souls. In our Hindu religion we believe that when anyone leaves this world actually leaves his/her body like changing old clothes and adopting new ones as Soul never dies and is never born, it is immortal. So believe me they are still with you both, standing next to you but unfortunately you can not see them.

Thank you SS. This is why I say "passed" instead of "lost". She is not lost, but only passed from this place to the next.

Kind regards .....
