Andromeda may be 3x larger than first thought

05/31/2005 4:18 PM

Scientists believe that the Andromeda galaxy is three times larger than they first thought. That would make it 220,000 light years across. That's a quintillion miles if you're from the US or 2 trillion kilometers for everyone else. Why should we care? Well, it might hit us in 5 billion years.

Boom

I wonder what the survival rate of two galaxies colliding would be for humanity. For some odd reason I think that could be labeled an "extinction level" event.
Of course 5 billion years is a loooonnnng time away.

Andromeda Units?

Hmmmm. 1 mile equals 1.6 kilometers. A quintillion miles should equal 1.6 quintillion kilometers. For you celestial physics geeks, that's about 14 billion AU.
